Discoving the Connection Between Hand and Health with Mari McCarthy

Many of us have gone through phases of keeping a journal. It served a purpose in our lives whether we realized it or not. It’s a record of events, a place to express our secret thoughts and feelings away from a harsh world, a tiny spot in the whole universe that is just ours. In Journaling Power: How to Create the Happy, Healthy Life You Want to Live, Mari McCarthy shares her experience with journaling and how it’s helped her address long-term health issues and finding happiness.

“Many of us have learned to live in our heads at the expense of our hearts and bodies. Yet to be truly happy and healthy, and to discover our true destiny, we need to express all aspects of ourselves.”

Last year, I was a guest blogger for Mari’s site CreateWriteNow.com. I shared my story of journaling and the impact it has made in my life. When I wrote that piece, I didn’t know much about Mari, why she started the website, or what she’d gone through. I’m so glad I had the opportunity to learn more about her story.

When Mari was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she looked for a way to practice writing with her left hand because her right was no longer functioning as it used to. Someone suggested writing therapy, and she started writing Morning Pages, using The Artists Way by Julia Cameron as a guide. In doing that, she discovered the direct line between her hand and health. Most writers can relate to that feeling. We understand the correlation between a pen and our mental well-being, but Mari also found the connection between a pen and her physical well-being. The more she journaled, the better she felt. She describes her first journaling experience as

“I don’t remember what exactly I wrote about that morning. But I’ll never forget how it made me feel.”

I spent half my life managing a long-term illness. Anything that offers relief and helps keep you in your body instead of always wanting to escape is a ray of sunshine. I appreciate everything Mari shares about her life, her struggles, and her vulnerability in telling this story.

If you’re new to journaling, haven’t done it for a while, and feel a bit rusty, or would like to expand your practice, Mari offers advice and includes the data to explain why it works. The blank page can scream pretty darn loud when you have no idea what to write. Sometimes the simple act of moving your hand allows for the words to flow. If that doesn’t work, each section offers prompts, ideas, and support. Often when you’re writing, stuff, some of it not so fun, comes up. She’s got suggestions for that too.

“the biggest surprise of all was this; through journaling I had found a door into my soul.”

  1. Very interesting. I am inspired to reread the Artist Way, and start journaling again.

  2. If you go to my Facebook post Mari put a link there to some help for people to get started. Her book also has a bunch of prompts and ideas. Pretty cool.

  3. You’ll never know what you know until you start writing. So, I’m titling mine … my journey through journaling.
